February 20th is Love Your Pet Day! You can find lots of great ideas and options to celebrate this special day with Fluffy or Fido, but what about smaller animals, like rabbits, gerbils, hamsters, and Guinea pigs? A Hendersonville, NC vet lists some ways to pamper a pocket pet below.
New Digs
Could your little buddy use a bigger, better cage? If so, this is the perfect time to get one! The minimum size requirements will depend on what sort of animal you have, so ask your vet for more information. However, we recommend getting the biggest one you can.
Comfy Bed
Who says small animals don’t enjoy comfy beds? Sleeping well is important for both people and pets! Just choose something that’s safe, washable, and free of hanging threads.
Treats
Treats are always a great way to brighten up a pet’s day. Every animal is different, so ask your vet for more information. (Tip: for rabbits and Guinea pigs, a bit of fruit, such as an apple slice or strawberry, may be a good option.)
Extra Free Time
A great cage is important, but your furry buddy shouldn’t be expected to stay in it all the time. Let your furry friend enjoy some extra ‘recess’ time!
Toys
Toys are a must for these little furballs! Many of them have open-rooted teeth, which can overgrow if they are not properly trimmed. You can make many of your furry pal’s playthings out of ordinary household items, such as cardboard and plain paper. Just avoid anything with small parts, sharp edges, or dangling ropes or threads. Anything covered in varnish, stain, or dye is also unsafe.
Castle
Actually, speaking of cardboard, why not make your tiny friend a cardboard castle? Just don’t be surprised if your pet eats his home later. This is a cute project for kids!
Photo Session
Little animals actually take some super cute pictures. Experiment with different settings and effects to get the best possible photo. (Tip: try using the macro setting, if you can.)
Buddies
This one isn’t a universal suggestion. Some smaller animals, such as the Syrian hamster, should always live alone. Others, however, like rabbits and Guinea pigs, are happier with roommates. It’s worth thinking about!
