Cute Ways To Celebrate International Rabbit Day

September 15 2021

Did you know that September 25th is International Rabbit Day? Bunnies are irresistibly cute, and they really do make fun pets. This is a great time to show Floppy some extra TLC, and maybe score some binkies! Here, a Hendersonville, NC vet lists some great ways to pamper a rabbit.

Carrot Cake

Fans of Bugs Bunny may be surprised to find that carrots actually aren’t Floppy’s favorite food. That would probably be something sweeter, like a strawberry. However, rabbits do like carrots, and can certainly enjoy them on occasion. Consider making your cute pet a carrot cake! You’ll need a quarter cup of rolled oats, a teaspoon of parsley, some Romaine lettuce, about a quarter of a ripe banana, and ¼ cup shredded carrots. Put everything but the banana and half the carrots in the food processor, and then pour the batter into a small cake tin. Bake at about 350 for about 15 minutes. Once it’s cooled, spread the ripe banana and remaining carrots on top. Instant binkies!

Box Castle

Rabbits love to chew things, and they also like to explore and hop on things. What better way to combine these things than by making Floppy a box castle? Just make sure that it’s sturdy enough! You’ll also need to remove any staples or tape from the cardboard, as your furball could try to eat her home.

Dig Box

Rabbits love to root and dig through things. Fill a shoebox, cardboard box, or shallow storage tote with small chew toys and some yummy treats. Then, add plain shredded paper and/or fresh herbs and Timothy hay. If you’re willing to let Floppy make a mess, you can fill the box with dirt. (You probably don’t want to do this indoors, so this is a good option for an enclosed patio that’s easy to hose off after.)

Toys

Rabbits have open-rooted teeth, which never stop growing. Your fuzzy little friend will need lots of safe toys to chew on. You can actually make lots of Floppy’s toys out of common household items, like plain paper and cardboard. Many wooden items are also fine. Look online for ideas and instructions. Just don’t offer anything that is small, sharp, and/or decorated in things like paint, varnish, dye, or glitter.
