Reasons To Adopt A Guinea Pig

March 15 2022

March is Adopt A Guinea Pig Month! This is one cause we are happy to get behind! Guinea pigs may be small, but they really do make fun and charming little pets. A Hendersonville, NC vet lists some reasons to love these little furballas below.

They’re Cute

First and foremost, Guinea pigs are absolutely adorable. It’s hard not to smile when looking at one of their furry little faces.

Double Trouble

Speaking of buddies, you can—and should—get two pets for pretty close to the price of one with these guys. In fact, you should! Cavies are very sociable, and get lonely with no friends. We recommend getting at least two. You get double the cuteness!

They’re Quiet …

One reason that Guinea pigs are such popular children’s pets is the fact that they don’t make much noise. You won’t need to worry about fielding angry calls from neighbors!

 … Except For Wheeks

Guinea pigs are pretty quiet, but they aren’t completely mute. Occasionally, they’ll make little squeaking/chirping noises, which are officially (okay, semi-officially) known as wheeks. Prepare to be charmed!

Popcorns!

Another adorable habit that these little furballs have is called popcorning. This is basically the Guinea pig version of a happy dance. Or, perhaps it’s better described as a ‘hoppy’ dance, since it involves jumping straight up. (We probably don’t have to tell you how cute this is.)

Cuddles

Many smaller pets are quite skittish. This is understandable, as they are prey animals in the wild. However, Guinea pigs can be very affectionate with their humans. Many even like to sleep in their owners’ laps!

They’re Gentle

Cavies are usually quite timid, and very rarely bite. (You will need to socialize and befriend your little buddies, though.)

No Training Required …

We love our canine companions, but they do need proper training. However, Guinea pigs don’t need any education. Your tiny pals will do just fine simply being themselves!

But You Can Teach Them Tricks!

Of course, just because you don’t have to train Guinea pigs, doesn’t mean you can’t. These guys can learn some very cute and simple tricks, such as jumping through hoops, sitting up, and coming when called.

Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns about your Guinea pig’s health or care. As your local Hendersonville, NC veterinary clinic, we are here to help!
