Trimming Fido’s Claws

May 1 2022

Does your furry pal make a clicking sound when he walks across the floor? If so, he probably needs a nail trim. This actually is much more important than many people realize! If your dog’s claws get too long, they may catch on things, which can cause tears and infections. Long nails also cause your pet some discomfort. Plus, they can interfere with his usual stance and stride, which will strain his bones and joints. Keep up with Fido’s pawdicures! A Hendersonville, NC vet offers some advice on clipping Fido’s nails below.

Desensitization

Many of our canine pals are pretty shy about having their feet handled. Changing Fido’s opinion on the matter may take work, but it will be well worth it. Don’t try to force him: he’ll only get more wary. Start by teaching him that he’ll get a delicious snack for letting you handle his paws. Then, start playing with his toes and running the clippers over them. Make the clippers ‘click’ so he gets used to the sound. Don’t cut just yet: you want him to get used to the sound and sensation, and associate them with yummy treats.

Tools

You may find it easier to use clippers that have sensors. These will indicate exactly where to make the cut, which can go a long way towards preventing mishaps. Nail grinders are another option, though not all dogs will tolerate them. Of course, you can also use regular clippers. Ask your vet or groomer to demonstrate with these, so you know exactly what to do.

Dew Claws

Don’t forget about your canine buddy’s dew claws! These can become ingrown if they get too long. That can be quite painful for Fido.

Bribery

Still no luck? Have someone feed Fido peanut butter while you’re doing his nails. Just use a brand that does not contain xylitol!

Styptic Powder

Always have some styptic powder on hand. If you do accidentally cut too far, it’s important for you to be able to stop any bleeding.

Treats

Don’t forget to reward your furry pal for being good. Follow up with a yummy treat, as well as lots of praise!
