Leaving Fido Home Alone

June 15 2022

Did you know that June 24th is Take Your Dog To Work Day! Assuming that your work is dog-friendly, and your pooch is polite and well-behaved enough to go to work with you, this can be a fun way to shake things up a bit. Of course, most of our canine patients stay home while their owners go off to work. Read on as a local Hendersonville, NC vet offers a few tips on keeping Fido happy, comfy, and safe while you’re out earning money for dog treats.

Schedule

Be sure to take Fido for a long walk before you leave. If possible, take time to play with him as well. The key here is to help your pup burn off some of that excess doggy energy. After a good workout, your furry pal will probably be a bit tired, and hopefully ready for a nap. His day will go by faster if he sleeps through a good chunk of it!

Safety

Never underestimate Fido’s ability to get into mischief … especially when he’s left unsupervised. Make your home safe for your canine companion by removing potential dangers. Some of the biggest concerns would be toxic plants, small or sharp objects, and wires or cords.

Entertainment

Fido will get bored and lonely sitting in a dark, quiet house. Offer him plenty of toys to amuse himself with! You may want to leave a radio on: the background noise can help keep your pooch from feeling lonely.

Separation Anxiety

Do you sometimes come home to find that Fido has chewed up your shoes, or perhaps gotten into the trash? Many people would assume that these things are simply bad behavior, but your pup may actually be suffering from separation anxiety. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Gadgets

Modern technology does offer some options that can make leaving your furry bff home alone easier and more fun for both of you. One example of this is the remote-controlled laser pointer. You can play with Fido remotely, using a laser pointer that works with a camera and phone app.

A Helping Hand

If Fido spends a lot of time alone, you may want to consider hiring a dog walker. Or, bring him to dog parks a few times a week.
