Halloween Safety For Cats

October 15 2022
Did you know that Halloween is one of the most dangerous holidays for cats? Fluffy may look cute posing beside a pumpkin or snoozing on a cozy blanket, and it’s always cute seeing her watch falling leaves. However, there are some very concerning seasonal dangers for people owned by cats to be aware of. In this article, a Hendersonville, NC vet discusses keeping your feline buddy safe around Halloween.

Decorate Carefully

Cats are very frisky and playful, which are definitely adorable traits. However, Fluffy’s silly streak can backfire. Kitties don’t know—or care—what is and isn’t safe for them. Keep anything small or sharp out of paws’ reach. Items with flames, batteries, and/or ropes or cords are also unsafe. Ask your vet for more information.

Keep Kitty In

Fluffy is always safer indoors, but this goes double around Halloween. The early sunsets, dropping temperature, increased traffic, wild animals, and possible chemical exposure all pose serious threats to an adventurous little furball. Black cats are purrticularly at risk, as they have been (unfairly) associated with witches and witchcraft.

Food Threats

Many sweet treats contain things like chocolate, raisins, and xylitol, which are all dangerous to cats. Small candies also present a choking risk, as do candy wrappers. Choose Fluffy’s treats carefully.

Be Cautious Of Fires

Cozy candles can really give your place a welcoming glow. However, keep them in high spots, where Fluffy can’t reach them. It’s far too easy for kitties to accidentally stick their tails near flames! If you use a fireplace, put a grate in front of it.

Avoid Rodenticides

In autumn, many homeowners find themselves fending off mice, chipmunks, and other critters that are wanting to come in from the cold. If Fluffy’s rodent-eviction skills, aren’t up to par, use humane, non-toxic pest control. Avoid using poisonous products. These will not only poison rodents, but also the things that eat them, such as owls, snakes, and, of course, cats.

Keep Kitty Warm

Fluffy may have a fur coat on, but she can still get chilly. Make sure your furry pal has plenty of warm, cozy napping spots to curl up in. In fact, cuddling up with a good book or movie and a purring cat is a great way to relax on a chilly autumn afternoon.
