Do you keep your cat indoors? If so, that’s great! Kitties are much safer staying inside, where they are protected from cars, weather, and other hazards. However, Fluffy will still enjoy being able to get a taste of nature. If you want to give your pet the best of both worlds, why not make her a catio? A Flat Rock, NC vet offers some purrfect suggestions in this article.
Choosing The Spot
A screened in porch or patio is an ideal spot for a catio. However, you can also use a sunroom, spare room, or even a bright corner.
Plants
You’ll want to add some pet safe plants for Fluffy to nibble on and hide behind. Just be sure to choose only pet-safe options. Some good ones are Ponytail palms, Areca palms, Rubber tree plants, Boston ferns, Spider plants, and Money trees. You can also make a little herb garden, which will come in handy for cooking. Many popular herbs, such as parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme, are safe for kitties. Catnip of course, is a must. Definitely avoid lilies, daffodils, azaleas, tulips, and oleander. You’ll find more information on safe and unsafe plants here .
Kitty Furniture
You’ll want to add a few pieces of kitty furniture for Fluffy to lounge around on. Cat towers are great for this! You can also make your furball a catwalk or a comfy window seat. Of course, you’ll also need to add soft beds and perhaps some empty boxes. For extra purrs, arrange things so that your furry buddy gets a great view when she looks outside. If you can, put a birdfeeder up where your pet can see it. Our feline friends love birdwatching!
Total Cat Pampering: Enclosure
If you’re the handy type and you have a yard, you can actually build Fluffy her own screened-in kitty enclosure. These allow cats to get outdoors and enjoy some sunlight and fresh air, while keeping them safe from predators. You’ll find many different designs online. Many use windows for access points, so you don’t have to worry about permanently altering your home.
Entertainment
Don’t forget to add some fun toys! You may want to stick with washable ones, at least if you’re using a screened porch or patio, as they will get quite dusty.
