Adopting a Shelter Cat Checklist

June 1 2021

June is Adopt A Shelter Cat Month! THis is a wonderful cause, and one we are thrilled to support. In this article, a Flat Rock, NC vet lists a few things to put on your shopping and to-do lists before bringing Fluffy home.

Buying cat food isn’t rocket science, but there are some things to keep in mind. Choose a high-quality brand that is suitable for your furball’s age and health. This is something you’ll want to get some specific advice on, so ask your vet for more information.

Litterbox/Litter

In most cases, any litter will do. However, if Fluffy is still a baby, avoid clay and clumping litters. Kittens are a bit clumsy, and can accidentally ingest litter. These types of litter can cause dangerous intestinal blockages if swallowed.

Kitty Furniture

Fluffy will need a few kitty necessities, such as a scratching post, a tower, and a few comfy beds. Try to purrsonalize the experience a bit. If you’re adopting an older cat, pick comfy things that are easy to get on and off. Kittens, on the other hand, will want fun pieces that incorporate lots of toys.

Toys

Speaking of toys, you’ll need some of those as well. Kitties can be a bit picky here, so start with a variety, and see what your pet likes best. It might be the laser pointer, or the squeaky mouse. Or, it could be that feather toy. (Some cats will ignore their playthings and pounce on a bottlecap instead, but that’s another post.) No matter what kind of kitty you have, you’ll need to pick up some comfy beds and napping spots.

Vet

Another thing you’ll want to do is schedule an appointment with the vet. Fluffy will need a nose-to-tail exam, as well as microchipping, vaccines, parasite control, and any other recommended care.

Kittyproofing

Kitties are known for being mischievous. Make your home safe for Fluffy by addressing potential dangers. Some of these include toxic plants, chemicals, medicine, wires and cords, plastic bags, and anything small or sharp. Ask your vet for more information.

Camera

Last but not least, get that camera (or phone) ready. You’ll want to snap lots of pictures of Fluffy’s arrival. We never get tired of seeing Gotcha Day photos!
