Summer Pet Care Tips

Summer is just about here! As the weather heats up, you’ll want to make a few adjustments to your pet’s care routine. Here, a Flat Rock, NC vet discusses caring for your furry pal in summer.

Fresh water is always important, of course. However, it’s especially important in hot weather. If you have a yard for your dog to patrol, keep water bowls both outside and inside. Change the water daily so it doesn’t collect dust and bacteria. On hot days, drop a few ice cubes into your pet’s water bowl. You may also want to consider getting a pet fountain.

Climate Control

Limit your furry friend’s outdoor time in really hot weather. If you have a dog, walk and play with Fido in the morning and evenings, when it isn’t quite as hot out. As for Fluffy, she’s better off staying indoors anyway. Keep climate control running in the house even when you’re out.

Paw Care

Dogs can burn their paw pads running on hot surfaces. Use paw balm or wax to protect Fido’s feet. This is especially important after he’s been swimming!

Wellness Care

Make sure your furry buddy sees the vet regularly. It’s also important to keep up with your pet’s parasite control and vaccinations. Summer is a peak season for fleas and ticks.

Keeping your pet well-groomed will help them stay cooler on those sweltering days. If you have a dog, consider getting Fido a summer haircut. This isn’t an across-the-board suggestion, however: some dogs have thick fur that actually helps keep them cooler. Ask your vet for advice. As for Fluffy, regular brushings will help keep her coat clean and soft.

Cool Snacks

Everyone loves a cool treat on a hot day! Pick up some doggy ice cream for Fido, or make pupsicles by freezing kibble, bacon bits, or shredded meat in sodium-free broth. As for Fluffy, she may enjoy a can of chilled cat milk, sodium-free broth, or plain tuna in water.

You may want to consider getting your pet a hammock bed for summer. These are cooler than regular beds, as they allow air to move beneath them. Besides, as far as Fluffy and Fido are concerned, you can never have too many beds!
