Preparing For A Kitten

October 1 2022
Have you recently decided to adopt a kitten? Congratulations! We’re sure that your bouncing ball of fur will waste no time in charming the socks off of you. While getting a kitten is fun and exciting, it’s also a lot of work. A local Flat Rock, NC vet offers some advice on getting ready for little Fluffy.

Petproofing

Kittens are tiny, curious, balls of mischief. Little Fluffy is going to be very interested in figuring out what she can and can’t play with. Small and sharp objects are a big concern here, as is anything with threads or ropes. You’ll also want to address plastic bags and ties. Ask your vet for more tips.

Holes

Little Fluffy can fit into some pretty tiny holes. Make sure that your screens close securely, and seal off gaps behind and beneath furniture and cabinets. It’s also a good idea to get into the habit of keeping toilets, washers, dryers, and other appliances closed when they’re not in use.

Toxins

Toxins are another concern. Many popular plants are poisonous to our feline overlords! You can get a full list at the ASPCA website here. You’ll also want to keep things like household chemicals, pesticides, and medicine out of paws’ reach.

Furniture

Little Fluffy probably won’t mind getting comfy on your things, but she should have some things that were made specifically for her. Pick up a few cozy beds. A good scratching post is also a must. Your feline pal may also enjoy a cat tower. Just don’t buy too many kitten-sized pieces, as your pet will quickly outgrow them.

Litter

If choosing litter for an adult cat, it really comes down to personal preference. However, avoid clay and clumping litters when shopping for kittens. Baby felines are quite clumsy, and they sometimes accidentally swallow litter. This is dangerous with these types of products, as they can cause intestinal obstructions if ingested.

Veterinary Appointment

One of the first things you’ll want to do is take your tiny furball to meet her new doctor. Exams, vaccines, microchipping, and spay/neuter surgery are all on the agenda. Get that appointment scheduled ASAP!
