Choosing The Cage
There are many different types of hamster cages available. Do some research, and make sure to get one that’s the right size for Hammie. (Tip: bigger is always better here.) Make sure the cage has solid floors and good ventilation!
Accessories
You’ll need to give your fuzzy friend some accessories. Your furry pal will need a hidey hole, a water bottle, and perhaps a dinner dish. Toys are also a must!
Climate
Hamsters need to be kept within a specific temperature range. Don’t put your miniature furball’s cage in cold or drafty areas, or in direct sunlight. Hammie shouldn’t be too close to a fireplace, heating ducts, or vent, either.
Noise
Noise is also something to consider. Avoid putting your tiny pal in loud spots, such as before a TV or speaker. Keep in mind that Hammie may also make noise, especially at night: if you are getting him as a child’s pet, he may keep your little one awake.
Other Pets
That old real estate adage about location, location, location also applies to hamster cages. If you have a cat or dog—or both—you’ll also need to situate the cage so they can’t look into it. Hammie won’t feel very comfortable with Fluffy or Fido staring at him!
Substrate
Your pint-sized pal will need substrate and some bedding. Avoid pine or cedar products: they’re actually toxic to small pets. Ask your vet for specific advice.
Roommates (Or Lack Thereof)
Many small pets are happier when they have buddies to snuggle up with. Hamsters are the exception here. While some hamsters can live with same-sex roommates, most—including the popular Syrian hamster—should always live alone.
Dishes
Like any other pet, hamsters need proper nutrition to stay healthy. You can give your furry buddy commercial food for breakfast and dinner, but he’ll also need some variety. Hammie’s menu can include carrots, apple slices, spinach, berries, dog biscuits, scrambled eggs, and even a little cheese. Ask your vet for recommendations.
