April Is Prev ention of Cruelty to Animals Month. If you’re an animal lover, as we are, you likely wish that you could help every unfortunate pet out there. While that’s just too big of a task for any one person, there are some things you can do to help. A Flat Rock, NC veterinarian lists some of them below.
Fight Back Against Dog Fighting
Unfortunately, dog fighting hasn’t gone away. It’s always heartbreaking to hear stories of dog fighting rings. One thing you can do is simply spread the word about this important cause. The Humane Society has a standing $5000 reward for information that leads to a conviction of dog fighters. Sharing the word about that—even by posting on social media—can help raise awareness. If you know or suspect of dog fighting in your area, consider raising the issue with local law enforcement and/or at town meetings.
Fix Yo ur Pet
Dogs and cats are both adorable pets. However, think twice before letting Fido or Fluffy breed. While you may find loving homes for your furry pal’s offspring, the next generation may not fare so well. This will also help battle pet overpopulation. A single pair of cats can foster a whopping 2, 072, 514 descendants in just eight years. As for dogs, a single dog can result in 67,000 puppies in only six years.
Notify Authorities
Do you know of an animal that needs help? It’s an act of kindness to notify proper authorities. In many cases, you can do so anonymously. This helps reduce the risk of retaliation. A simple phone call could save a pet’s life!
Adopt, Don’t Shop
There are some great breeders out there. Unfortunately, there are also less scrupulous ones. When it’s time for you to adopt your new furry friend, consider going through a shelter or rescue. It also feels great to give a pet a second chance!
Support Animal Rescues
There are many wonderful rescues and charities that are giving pets second chances. Many of them run on shoestring budgets, and/or rely on fosters and volunteer work. Donations of money, food, or supplies are always helpful. If you want to go a step further, look into volunteering or even fostering.
